Area Model

Area Model questions are useful for doing formative assessments to test students understanding of arithmetic.

Try it

Using the arrow buttons create a model of the appropriate size and fill in the cells to create a model of the given expression. Complete the partial sum using the column grid on the right.

How it works

Students are presented with an arithmetic expression and an area model tool for constructing an area model instance that reflects the algorithm used to evaluate the expression.

Students can divide the model horizontally and vertically to create a grid of the proper dimensions. They add values into each of the cells and column and row labels. They can also add annotations to each of the elements to explain their thinking.

Note: The area model question type can be set to provide immediate feedback (as in this demo), delayed feedback through a "Check Answer" button, or delayed feedback for summative use cases.
